Indonesian middle schools teach physics inside an integrated science subject (IPA), sharing lesson time with biology and chemistry. A middle school physics tutor from EduPoint gives that physics strand room of its own: the student guesses what a bottle, a lump of plasticine or a string of bulbs will do, tries it, and only then works through the formula. Sessions run at home or online, one tutor with one student.

Middle school physics tutoring gives a grade 7 to 9 student private help with the physics strand of IPA, which Indonesia's Kurikulum Merdeka (Phase D) teaches together with biology and chemistry. Measurement, motion and pressure, heat, work and energy, waves, and electricity and magnetism are all covered, from Rp61,000 per hour.
A home visit and an online session of equal length are priced identically. The card figures change only with session length or the number of students sharing the tutor.
The tutor comes to wherever the student studies, so household experiments can be run together on the spot.

Online and in-person cost the same — the gap between these cards is session length, nothing else.
The split below follows the ministry's sample learning-objective sequence for Phase D science. Schools are free to reorder it, so the physics tutor first lines it up with the textbook and test outline the student actually has.
Grade 7 is where physics calculations first show up. SI units, measuring tools and density return in every later topic, so grade 7 physics tutoring gives unit conversion enough practice before pressure arrives.
Focus Areas:
In grade 8 the calculations start to link up: work connects to kinetic and potential energy, and vibrations lead into waves and light. A grade 8 physics tutor keeps track of which formula belongs to which situation.
Focus Areas:
Grade 9 closes Phase D with magnetism and electricity, which also underpin high school physics. A grade 9 physics tutor trains the student to read a circuit, follow the current branch by branch, and recognise clean sources of electrical energy.
Focus Areas:
The Phase D science learning outcomes list 14 essential content items. Six of them carry physics, and those six are what a private middle school physics tutor works through.
Every topic, from measurement to electricity, also trains the way scientists work: noticing what happens, asking questions and making guesses, designing a test, handling data, judging the results, and explaining them to others.
The entry point to middle school physics. Students learn to measure carefully and write the result in the right unit.
The densest physics topic at this level, set in contexts such as submarines, hot-air balloons and hydraulic jacks.
Connecting the forces at work with the energy that moves, a key step before high school mechanics.
Telling temperature and heat apart, then seeing how heat travels and changes the size of objects.
From pendulums and a shaken rope to the lenses and mirrors inside optical instruments.
Circuits and magnets, including how electricity can be generated from clean sources.
Each student's needs differ by grade, school curriculum and what they want from their studies.

Physics education researchers in Indonesia have measured which ideas middle school students mix up most. Our physics tutors use those findings as a checklist during the first few sessions.
Why it happens
In a four-tier test of grade 8 students at a public middle school in Bangkalan (2022), the average misconception rate on pressure was 27%, and gas pressure was the highest sub-concept at 38%. You cannot see gas pressure or press on it with a finger the way you can with plasticine.
How we fix it
The student predicts what will happen to a sealed plastic bottle or a balloon before trying it. Once the result is in front of them, the tutor writes down how force, area and pressure relate, and the calculation problems follow.
Why it happens
A study of grade 9 students at three schools in Bangkalan and Bojonegoro classed 34.5% of answers on direct-current circuits as misconceptions, with only 22.6% showing full understanding. Current, voltage and resistance are invisible, so students easily push numbers around with no picture of the circuit.
How we fix it
Tutor and student redraw the circuit together, trace the current one branch at a time, and the student explains in their own words which bulb shines brighter before any calculation.
Why it happens
A 2023 literature review on middle school students summarised average misconception rates of 69% on temperature and 63.79% on heat. Everyday Indonesian uses one word, "panas", for both.
How we fix it
The tutor separates them with a kitchen example: ice in a glass keeps absorbing heat while its temperature holds steady until the last of it melts. From there, reading a temperature-time graph feels far less confusing.
Why it happens
Measurement and SI units open grade 7, then return in every speed, pressure, density and energy problem. One wrong conversion step throws off the whole answer even when the formula is right.
How we fix it
Conversion is practised with a unit ladder and real measuring, such as finding the density of a small stone with a measuring cup. In every later problem the tutor asks the student to write the unit on each line.
The figures above come from studies with specific samples, so they point the way. Each student's own understanding is still mapped directly by their tutor.
A few habits that keep physics sessions on track from week to week.
The student guesses the outcome of an experiment first. A wrong guess is useful, because it shows which idea needs work.
The tutor checks which topics are solid and which are shaky, then orders the work around the school calendar.
Between sessions, students can open materials, recordings and progress notes in the EduPoint learner app.
If a physics tutor's teaching style does not click, a replacement is free, as many times as needed.
Book sessions in the morning, after school or in the evening. Schedule changes go through WhatsApp.
Meet six tutors who teach physics for grades 7 to 9. Each card lists the university and degree from that tutor's own education history, and every student is paired by grade, the textbook their school uses, and the physics chapter now in class.

Physics Education, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana
Reading measuring scales in the quantities chapter“Grade 7 science opens with measurement, and that is where many learners stumble over the scale of a vernier caliper or a stopwatch. Agi studied Physics Education at Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana and likes to have learners measure objects around the table before opening the exercises.”

Physics Education, Universitas Negeri Semarang
Temperature, heat, and changes of state from the kitchen“An ice cube melting in a glass, water boiling in a pot: Desy often uses simple scenes like these when learners begin the chapter on heat and changes of state. Her Physics Education background at Universitas Negeri Semarang shapes how she plans learning steps in a clear order.”

Physics, Universitas Hasanuddin
Straight-line motion through distance-time graphs“A distance-time graph records how fast an object moves, and reading one is easiest to grasp from a movement the learner makes personally. Raihan, a Physics graduate of Universitas Hasanuddin, has learners walk slowly and then quickly, draw the graph, and read it together.”

Physics Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia
Pressure and floating objects, starting with a guess“An iron ship that floats always raises questions. In the chapter on pressure and Archimedes' principle, Jelita asks learners to guess which objects will sink before testing them in a basin, a habit she carries from the Physics Education programme at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.”

Master of Physics Education, Universitas Negeri Jakarta
Series and parallel circuits in grade 9“For the grade 9 electricity chapter, Tini redraws series and parallel circuits with the learner until the direction of the current is easy to follow. She studied Physics Education at Universitas Negeri Jakarta through to the master's level.”

Physics, Universitas Sebelas Maret
Vibration, waves, and sound you can hear“Why does a string sound higher when it is tightened? Choirul, who studied Physics at Universitas Sebelas Maret, brings questions like this into sessions on vibration and waves, then links them to frequency and wavelength in the learner's textbook.”

Quick answers to what physics learners, or the person enrolling them, raise before signing up.
The Kurikulum Merdeka teaches Phase D science (IPA) as one integrated course, so physics for grades 7 to 9 shares a single subject with biology and chemistry. Students therefore rarely see physics as a single storyline, even though each topic leans on the one before it.
In the sample learning sequence published by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, grade 7 opens with measurement: base and derived quantities, SI units, conversions, and density. Those tools are used straight away in motion, force, and pressure, and again in heat and thermal expansion. A student who still hesitates when turning grams into kilograms, or cubic centimetres into cubic metres, usually stalls once liquid pressure or buoyant force calculations arrive.
Grade 8 links force to work and energy, then moves on to vibration, waves, light, and optical instruments. Here the formulas start to chain together, since kinetic and potential energy are calculated from quantities first met in grade 7.
Grade 9 closes Phase D with magnetism and electricity, running from static and current electricity to electromagnetic induction and clean sources of electrical energy. This is also the ground that grade 10 physics stands on.
Each school may arrange the order its own way, so treat this map as the big picture. The practical takeaway for a student is to patch gaps in the early topics first, because everything later is built on them. A physics tutor matches this map against the student's textbook and school calendar before planning the order of sessions.
The most useful practice at home copies the steps a scientist takes. The Phase D science guide lists six process skills: observing, questioning and predicting, planning an investigation, processing data, evaluating, and communicating results. All six can be practised with things already in the house.
Take pressure as an example. Before opening the formula, the student presses modelling clay with the sharp tip of a pencil and then with the blunt end, and writes down a guess: which mark will be deeper, and why. After trying it, the guess is checked against what happened. Only then does the pressure formula come in for the calculation, so the numbers in the problem have a real picture behind them.
For heat, two glasses of hot and cold water are enough to watch the two temperatures move toward each other. Grade 9 circuits need little more than a battery, a few wires, and a small bulb: connect them in series, then in parallel, and compare how brightly the bulb glows each time.
The second habit is a units notebook. Every time a new quantity appears, the student writes down its SI unit, the instrument that measures it, and one sample conversion. That notebook stays useful all the way to grade 9.
The third habit is small, regular practice. Two or three calculation problems a day, with every step written out, make it easy to see where mistakes tend to happen. A mistake that keeps showing up at the same step is good material for the next physics tutoring session.
A middle school student's physics marks are recorded through the school's IPA assessments. The Kurikulum Merdeka uses formative assessment throughout learning, for instance during class experiments, and summative assessment at the end of a block of material. The sample summative items in the official science guide are true-or-false statements, analysis of experimental data, and case studies that ask the student to work out speed, acceleration, resultant force, or pressure.
Those formats point to how to prepare. Data analysis questions ask the student to read a table of measurements and draw a conclusion, so practice in reading tables and graphs matters as much as remembering formulas. Case study questions ask the student to pick the right formula for the situation described, which means the first step is always the same: mark the quantities that are given and the one being asked for.
What about the TKA? The 2026 Academic Ability Test for middle school was sat by grade 9 students from 6 to 16 April 2026, and its two papers were Indonesian and Mathematics. Science, physics included, was not tested. Even so, the calculation skills used in physics, such as handling units, ratios, and simple equations, overlap with mathematics.
The National Assessment measures literacy and numeracy and likewise does not test science as a subject. Physics preparation is therefore best aimed at the school's own assessment calendar: the teacher's question outline, the chapter currently being taught, and any experiment reports due. Rules for future exam years always follow the ministry's official announcements.
Private physics tutoring pays off most when sessions go straight to the places where a student is genuinely stuck. Physics education research in Indonesia gives clues about where those places are. Among grade 9 students at three schools, more than a third of answers about direct current circuits were classed as misconceptions. A literature review of middle school students also reported high misconception rates on temperature and heat, including thermal equilibrium.
In the first sessions, the tutor maps which topics are secure and which are not. Students are encouraged to bring their textbook, class notes, the question outline, and any test papers that did not go well. From that material the tutor can see the pattern: whether the trouble lies in the concept, in unit conversion, or in reading word problems.
Once the pattern is clear, the sessions are shaped around it. A student who keeps mixing up temperature and heat gets a small experiment before the formula. A student whose concepts are sound but whose arithmetic slips gets step-by-step practice.
The practical arrangements adapt as well. Each meeting is booked as a 60, 90, or 120 minute block, with 4 to 28 sessions in a month. A physics session can be slotted between 06.00 and 23.00, held face to face in the student's home or over Zoom or Google Meet, where the recording stays available for revisiting a tricky derivation later. Between sessions, learning materials and progress reports are available in the EduPoint learner app. If a tutor's approach to Newton's laws or circuits clashes with how the student thinks, the student can ask for a replacement, and the switch carries no added charge.
Middle school learners come to physics with different goals, and private tutoring can be arranged around each of them.
Students interested in the science olympiad should know that physics at the middle school level of OSN sits inside the IPA field, together with biology and chemistry. The competition runs in stages from school to regency or city, province, and national level, and for 2026 it was moved online. A physics tutor can go deeper into the physics portion with longer problems that call for reasoning, while biology and chemistry can be covered through science tutoring or the related subjects.
Students at schools using Cambridge Lower Secondary study Science with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology strands, and some are preparing for Cambridge Checkpoint. Sessions can be taught in Indonesian or bilingually in Indonesian and English, so terms such as density, resultant force, and series circuit are recognised in the language of the exam. The EduPoint middle school programme also covers the Kurikulum Nasional Plus and IB MYP.
Learners in the Paket B equivalency programme are in the same Phase D as regular middle school students, and some of them are adults. Private tutoring leaves room to fit sessions around work or other commitments, with material that still follows the national science learning outcomes.
Whoever does the enrolling, whether the student, a parent, or a guardian, the steps are the same: a consultation, sharing the schedule and needs, the EduPoint team finding a suitable physics tutor, and then the first session.
