In Indonesian middle school, science (IPA) is a single subject whose field changes from one chapter to the next: heat and expansion this month, classifying living things a few weeks later. Your private science tutor follows the chapter your grade 7, 8 or 9 class is on and adjusts the way of studying to suit it, at home or online.

Private science tutoring for SMP pairs one tutor with one learner in grade 7, 8 or 9 for Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam, the middle school subject covering physics, chemistry, biology, and earth and space science in one book per grade. Schools teach it about four lesson hours a week; sessions run 60, 90 or 120 minutes, from Rp61,000 per hour.
A lower secondary science meeting can run 60 minutes to work through one subtopic, 90 minutes for a full chapter with practice, or 120 minutes in the run-up to a test. Any given length is priced the same whether it happens in person or on screen, and getting the tutor to the learner is already built into the in-person price.
A science tutor travels to the learner's home or another study spot you agree on. A good fit for learners who understand faster when they can see equipment and models up close.

The chapter order below follows the official Ministry of Education textbooks. The teacher's guide says this sequence is not binding, so the tutor works to the order the learner's own school uses.
The revised 2024 edition of the grade 8 science book arranges chapters differently from the 2021 scope map, for example placing pressure and soil in grade 8. Bring the class textbook and science notebook to the opening lesson so the tutor reads from the same edition the learner uses.
The first year of SMP introduces how scientists work: measure, record, then draw a conclusion. Grade 7 science tutoring sets up that habit from the very first chapter.
Grade 8 is the heaviest year for organ systems and energy calculations. Grade 8 science tutoring splits the time between understanding body processes and practising calculations with tidy units.
The final year holds the most abstract chapters, such as electric circuits and inheritance. Grade 9 science tutoring is also the time to shore up grade 7 and 8 material that is still shaky.
The Phase D learning outcomes assess two elements: science understanding and process skills. The second one often lags because multiple-choice tests rarely touch it, yet project work and lab reports depend on it.
What a middle school science learner needs depends on the grade, the school, and the field that gives them the most trouble.
Scientific method, matter and heat arrive one after another in the first semester. Grade 7 science tutoring builds the habit of measuring and recording early.
Recommended:
Organ systems, pressure, electricity and genetics pile up in these two years while every semester's report keeps counting.
Recommended:
Biology chapters feel easy, then marks drop in physics because of units and formulas. The tutor gives more time to calculation practice while keeping the other chapters moving.

Learners in Cambridge Lower Secondary, IB MYP or bilingual schools can be matched with a bilingual tutor used to science terms in English.
Recommended:
Learners preparing for a science olympiad or studying through homeschooling need a fully planned sequence of material and depth beyond the class textbook.

Indonesian science education researchers have studied these difficulties in depth. The patterns repeat, which lets a tutor plan the way out from the first few sessions.
Why it happens
A 2023 literature review by science education researchers at Universitas Jember put the average misconception rate for heat at 63.79%, and for temperature even higher, at 69%. The same review also flagged confusion about thermal equilibrium.
How we fix it
The tutor separates the two quantities through simple observation (warm water mixed with cold water, a thermometer, and a record of how the temperature changes) before any heat formula appears, so the calculations rest on an idea that is already sound.
Why it happens
In grade 8 science calculation problems, a 2023 study in Jurnal Pendidikan MIPA found the largest share of errors in unit conversion (40.9%), followed by writing the formula (27.2%) and writing units (13.6%). The concept is often understood; the answer slips at a small step.
How we fix it
Every exercise on work, energy, pressure or electricity is done with the units written out in a column from start to finish. The tutor checks each line, so the learner sees exactly where an answer started to go wrong.
Why it happens
A three-tier test of grade 7 students (SNIPA UNNES proceedings) recorded the highest misconception rate on the liquid-to-gas change, at 40.0%. The mistakes varied: particles thought to grow when heated, gas thought to have no mass, evaporation thought to happen only at boiling point.
How we fix it
Tutor and learner redraw the particle arrangement for each state of matter, then test it against everyday events, such as laundry that still dries on a cloudy day even though the water never boils.
Why it happens
A 2022 study of grade 8 students at two middle schools (Diklabio) found photosynthesis misconceptions of around 38%. The recorded causes: wrong prior knowledge, internet explanations of uneven accuracy, and textbook language that is hard to follow.
How we fix it
The tutor turns textbook terms into everyday sentences, asks the learner to explain the idea back in their own words, and helps sort out which extra reading sources are reliable.
The figures come from studies with specific samples and schools, so they describe a pattern. Each learner's own needs are mapped directly in the first session.
The service is built around what the learner needs: a well-matched tutor, access to materials, and a flexible schedule.
During the consultation, tell us which chapter or field is hardest. EduPoint finds a tutor with a fitting background, for example physics, chemistry or biology education.
When the way a tutor explains science is not clicking for the learner, ask for someone else whenever you like, as many times as needed.
The EduPoint learner app holds study materials, session recordings and the learning report, so the learner can revisit any science chapter outside lesson time.
Book science sessions in the morning before school, in the afternoon after extracurriculars, or in the evening.

The cards below introduce six people from EduPoint's SMP science tutor roster. Majors and universities on each card come from what the tutor declared when registering their schooling, and learners are matched by grade, textbook edition and the chapter their class is on.

Science Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo
The particle model for the matter chapter“Sugar dissolving in warm tea is Salsa's favourite way into the particle model in grade 7. She studied Science Education at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo and gets learners into the habit of sketching how particles are arranged before answering questions about states of matter.”

Master's in Science Education, Universitas Negeri Surabaya
Grade 8 organ systems through concept maps“Grade 8 packs many organ systems into a single year, and Yandri helps learners map how those organs connect on one sheet of paper. He started with Biology Education at Universitas Nusa Cendana and went on to a master's in Science Education at Universitas Negeri Surabaya, so he keeps tying biology back to the other science chapters.”

Science Education, Universitas Pakuan
Ecology observed in the neighbourhood“Food chains feel closer when the examples come from a garden or a drain near home. Anita, a Science Education graduate of Universitas Pakuan who also studied Biology Education at Universitas Negeri Jakarta, asks learners to note the living things they come across before opening the ecology chapter.”

Science Education, UIN Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo
The scientific method, step by step“Research question, hypothesis and variable all appear in the first SMP science chapter, and the three are easy to mix up. Dela studied Science Education at UIN Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo and likes guiding learners through small experiments with kitchen materials so every term has a real example.”

Mathematics and Science Education, Universitas Indraprasta PGRI
Work, energy and simple machine calculations“Lever and pulley problems in grade 8 call for tidy working. Maman studied Mathematics and Science Education at Universitas Indraprasta PGRI and Mathematics Education at Universitas Negeri Jakarta, so he is at home unpacking energy and force formulas line by line with the learner.”

Science Education, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta
Series and parallel circuits in grade 9“Ningrum starts the grade 9 electricity chapter with nothing more than a battery, a length of wire and a small bulb. Drawing on her Science Education studies at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, she has learners sketch series and parallel circuits, guess which bulb will glow brighter, then check it with a simulation or simple kit.”

Permendikdasmen No. 13 of 2025, the curriculum structure rule, gives science (IPA) a single compulsory slot in the SMP timetable. The official textbook is called Integrated Science: one book per grade that brings together physics, chemistry, biology, and earth and space science. Physics, chemistry and biology only appear as elective subjects in grade 11 of senior high, so for three SMP years the four fields take turns under one name.
That rotation is often why science marks rise and fall from chapter to chapter. A learner can feel at home in the chapter on classifying living things, then stall once the class reaches motion and force. Each field asks for its own way of thinking. Physics chapters ask for formulas, units and graphs. Chemistry chapters ask the learner to picture particles nobody can see. Biology chapters ask for process sequences and a lot of vocabulary. Earth and space chapters ask for a sense of position and scale.
So the first step in studying integrated science at SMP level is to name the field of the chapter running in class, then set up the right tools for it. Physics needs scrap paper and a calculator, biology needs flowcharts, and chemistry needs drawings of particle arrangements. Naming the field also helps an SMP science tutor plan practice, because a learner's sticking points usually cluster in one or two fields.
In the Ministry's Integrated Science teacher guide, chapters are laid out in tiers, and many grade 9 chapters rest on grade 7 and 8 material. Grade 7 opens the year with measurement, the scientific method and the particle model of matter. Grade 8 uses that toolkit for work and energy, waves, separating mixtures and the human organ systems. Grade 9 then brings learners to the most abstract chapters, such as electric circuits, chemical reactions and inheritance.
School time is limited, too. Science gets 144 lesson hours of regular classes a year in grades 7 and 8, and 128 in grade 9. That works out to about 4 lesson hours a week, with each lesson hour lasting 40 minutes. Most chapters close within a few weeks and the class moves to another field, so a gap left open in grade 7 rarely gets revisited in class by grade 9, even though the new chapters lean on it.
That is why sensible grade 9 science tutoring usually sets aside a few sessions to patch grade 7 and 8 foundations before a new chapter begins. The same pattern continues after graduation: grade 10 still teaches science as one subject covering physics, chemistry and biology, so the habit of linking chapters across years stays useful a year later.
Phase D outcomes for science look at how well the learner understands the concepts and how well they handle process skills. Those skills break down into six activities: the learner observes, asks questions while guessing the result, designs and runs an investigation, works through the data, looks back at the steps taken, and finally shares the findings. All six can be practised at home with safe, everyday materials.
For the heat transfer chapter, a learner can stand a metal spoon and a wooden spoon in a glass of warm water, guess which handle will feel warm first, then write down what happens. For ecology, a week of notes on a potted plant already counts as data that can be turned into a table. For light, a torch and a clear glass of water are enough to watch refraction.
Calculation questions need a habit of their own. Write the unit on every line of working, including when multiplying and dividing, because SMP science answers often slip at exactly that small step. Vocabulary-heavy biology chapters become easier when one subsection is redrawn as a flowchart in the learner's own words, then explained out loud in two minutes.
Session recordings and practice material in the EduPoint learner app can be reopened at any time outside lesson hours. Twenty minutes with the recording the day after a session is enough to mark the parts that still feel fuzzy and bring them to the next meeting.
The grade 9 Academic Ability Test (TKA) has a short subject list. Permendikdasmen No. 9 of 2025 names Indonesian and Mathematics alone, each set at 30 questions to finish in 75 minutes. SMP science marks are therefore built entirely at school, through chapter tests, assignments, lab reports, co-curricular projects and end-of-semester exams, and the names of those exams differ from school to school.
All of those marks end up in the school report. In several regions the SMP report is used in the achievement track for senior high admission. Central Java's 2026/2027 admissions, for example, use the reports from semesters 1 to 5. In practice, a grade 7 first-semester science mark already counts, long before the learner starts thinking about the next school.
The preparation that fits this kind of assessment is spread across the semester. Start from the school's test calendar and count backwards: the final week before a chapter test goes to mixed questions, and the weeks before it go to understanding each subsection in turn. Co-curricular science work gets 36 lesson hours a year in grades 7 and 8, so project reports and presentations deserve an early start. As the grade 9 TKA approaches, Mathematics and Indonesian usually take more study time. SMP science tutoring can be trimmed for a while so grade 9 chapters keep moving without piling up.
The first private SMP science session is most useful when it maps what the learner already understands. The tutor may set a few short questions from past chapters, then ask for the reasoning behind each answer. That reasoning often reveals a misconception more clearly than the score does, such as the belief that gas has no mass or that temperature and heat are the same quantity.
To keep tutoring in step with class, the tutor works from the learner's own school material: the textbook, worksheets, notes and test calendar. During the consultation, mention the field that causes the most trouble so EduPoint can find a tutor whose background in physics, chemistry or biology sits closest to that need.
The pace follows the need. Science lessons can be booked 4 to 28 times a month, with every session set at 60, 90 or 120 minutes. A learner who only needs to patch one field often does fine with one meeting a week, while someone catching up on several missed chapters can book a denser schedule early in the semester and ease off later. Lessons can be set any time from six in the morning until eleven at night.
In every meeting, ask the learner to explain the concept back in their own words before the practice questions begin. If a tutor's teaching style does not quite click, the learner or whoever enrolled them can ask for a different tutor, with no limit on how many times.
