Physical and chemical changes are the same
Why it happens
Students struggle to tell them apart.
How we fix it
A physical change alters shape or state without a new substance, like ice melting. A chemical change produces a new substance, like iron rusting.
Plants get their food from the soil
Why it happens
Students think roots absorb food from soil.
How we fix it
Plants make their own food through photosynthesis from carbon dioxide, water, and light. Soil provides water and minerals, not food.
Objects sink only because they are heavy
Why it happens
Students think heavy things always sink.
How we fix it
Sinking or floating is determined by density compared to water, not weight alone. A steel ship is very heavy yet floats.
The moon is not in the sky during the day
Why it happens
Students think the moon only appears at night.
How we fix it
The moon is still there during the day and is sometimes visible. Bright sunlight makes it less contrasting, not gone.
All bacteria are harmful
Why it happens
Students think bacteria always cause disease.

Many bacteria are beneficial, for example aiding digestion and making yoghurt and tempeh. Only a small portion are pathogens.
The best way to correct them is not to scold, but to let the child observe and prove it themselves.
