The Mandarin Mistakes We Most Often Correct on Screen
From thousands of online sessions, a few mistakes recur because tones and characters mean a small slip can change the meaning. On the digital whiteboard, here are the five we fix most.
Ignoring tones
Why it happens
One syllable with different tones has different meanings.
How we fix it
On screen we drill the four tones from the start, since ma can mean mother or horse depending on the tone, and students can replay the recording of each tone.
Forgetting measure words (liangci)
Why it happens
Mandarin needs a specific measure word between a number and a noun.
How we fix it
We introduce the right measure word per type of object, for example flat items or animals, through contextual practice on the digital whiteboard.
Mispronouncing pinyin q, x, zh, and c
Why it happens
These sounds have no exact match in Indonesian.
How we fix it
Over video, the teacher shows tongue position for each pinyin sound so pronunciation is clear, and students can compare it against the recording.
Random character stroke order
Why it happens
Students write characters without stroke rules.

Expecting verbs to conjugate like other languages

Students look for past forms of verbs.
