Common When Learning English
The Common English Mistakes We See Most Often
Because English structure differs greatly from Indonesian, a few mistakes keep recurring. The five we meet most.
Wrong tenses, e.g. yesterday I go
Why it happens
Indonesian does not change verbs by time, so students forget to.
How we fix it
We drill time patterns: past uses the second form (went), present adds s for he/she (goes), through repeated examples.
Missing or misusing a, an, and the
Why it happens
Indonesian has no articles, so students often drop them.
How we fix it
We teach a/an for a general first mention, the for something already specific, with contextual practice.
Subject and verb do not agree, e.g. he go
Why it happens
Students forget to add s for third-person singular.
How we fix it
We make he, she, it always take a verb with s in the present tense through short drills.
Translating word by word from Indonesian
Why it happens
Students build English sentences with Indonesian structure.
How we fix it
We train thinking in English patterns and recognizing collocations, so students move beyond literal translation.
Ignoring the th sound and silent letters
Why it happens
The th sound and silent letters do not exist in Indonesian.
How we fix it
We train tongue position for th and mark silent letters like in know and listen.
