SMA Study Guide: From Daily Habits to a University Choice

Retrieval practice means pulling an answer out of memory before looking at the notes. Researchers call it the testing effect, and together with spaced practice it sits at the top of the Dunlosky review. For an SMA student the simplest form is a flashcard: a question on one side, the answer on the other. After each sub-chapter, the student writes five to ten cards, for example "how does an exothermic reaction differ from an endothermic one" or "write the distance formula for uniformly accelerated motion".

Using the cards follows a routine. Each card is answered aloud or on blank paper before it is flipped. Cards answered wrongly go into a separate pile that comes back more often, while cards that are already easy wait longer. For maths and physics, a card holds one short problem with no worked example beside it, so the student has to pick the method unaided. A flashcard app can schedule the reviews automatically, and a stack of paper cards does the same job.

For history, sociology or biology, a useful variation is the brain dump: close the book, write everything you remember about one topic for five minutes, then compare with the notes and circle what was missing. The circled parts become the next round of practice. Signs that the habit is working: the student can explain a concept to a friend in their own words, and the pile of missed cards shrinks from week to week.

Every student has 168 hours a week. A timetable that lasts begins with an audit: for seven days the student records sleep, travel, school hours, clubs, prayer, meals and screen time. Plenty of students only see how many hours go to scrolling social media once the number is written down. The audit gives an honest picture of the time left for independent study, so the plan built afterwards rests on real figures.

The next step flips the usual order. Study blocks go into the calendar first, each with a day, a time and a named subject, and everything else fills the space around them. The chosen hours are those when energy is still good, for instance before evening prayers for students who tire easily at night. One spare block per week absorbs surprise assignments. Inside each block, the Pomodoro technique splits time into 25 minutes of focus and a 5-minute break, with a longer break after four rounds. Essays and lab reports work better in 50-minute sessions with 10-minute breaks.

Tasks are ranked on an urgent and important grid. Revising for next month's test sits in the important quadrant with weeks still to spare, so it gets a fixed block and stops losing out to whatever is loudest that evening. When a task feels too heavy to start, the two-minute rule helps: open the book and write a single sentence. The timetable can be called working once most blocks have happened for three weeks running without late nights.

In Phase F, which covers grades 11 and 12, Kurikulum Merdeka students take several elective subjects matched to their interests. Kemendikdasmen guidance requires every SMA to offer at least seven electives, and the guidance process starts in grade 10. The combination a student picks shapes what they study in depth for two years, so it is worth preparing from the first semester.

The main reference is the list of supporting subjects for each degree programme. Ministerial Decree No. 345/M/2022 groups degree programmes into five fields of knowledge (humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, formal sciences and applied sciences) and lists the subjects that support each programme. A student leaning towards engineering, for example, checks whether advanced mathematics and physics appear for the programmes they have in mind. The latest list is published on the official SNPMB website and should be opened before the elective form is filled in.

When interests still point in several directions, the safest combination keeps two or three paths open. A student torn between psychology and medicine, say, can look for the subjects both lists share. Class capacity at the school matters as well, so choices are discussed with the homeroom teacher and the counsellor. Preparation is complete when the student can explain why each chosen subject is there and which degree programme it connects to.

Programme names can mislead. A student who pictures communication studies as broadcasting may be surprised to find statistics and research methods in the first year. That is why grade 11 is a good time to read the official curricula of three to five programmes on university websites. The focus is on courses in the first two semesters, the amount of lab work, and the compulsory courses students complain about most. The same programme can differ from one university to another, so comparisons are made campus by campus.

Document research is paired with experience. Students can take an introductory online course to get a feel for a field, interview one or two people working in it about their daily routine and challenges, attend an open house or programme webinar, or shadow someone at work for a day. Impressions from each experience go into a dedicated notebook: which parts felt enjoyable and which grew dull quickly.

From those notes the list is cut to three to five majors. Keeping it short keeps the research deep. In grade 12 the shortlist narrows to one first choice and at least one backup the student still genuinely wants. Conversations about tuition and location with parents or guardians are best settled before the application period opens. A shortlist is ready when, for every programme on it, the student can name three first-year courses and give one reason drawn from their own experience.

SNBT selects on UTBK scores from a centrally administered computer-based test. The UTBK has seven subtests: four in the Scholastic Potential Test (General Reasoning, General Knowledge and Understanding, Reading Comprehension and Writing, and Quantitative Knowledge), followed by Indonesian Literacy, English Literacy and Mathematical Reasoning. Many questions test reasoning about texts, data and graphs, so the reading habit built since grade 10 pays its way here.

Students start recognising question patterns in grade 11 and sit full practice tests regularly in grade 12. The most valuable part comes after each practice test: every wrong or guessed answer is logged with its cause, whether a concept not yet understood, a misread question or time running out. The subtest with the longest log gets the largest share of practice the following week. Progress shows when the same type of mistake turns up less often in later practice tests.

SNBT programme choices are built from estimated practice scores, capacity and competitiveness figures on the official SNPMB data, mixing ambitious choices with safer ones. At regular state universities, SNBP must take at least 20 percent of places and SNBT at least 40 percent, while Mandiri is capped at 30 percent. Universities with legal-entity status set their own quotas. The Mandiri route is run by each university, which may use UTBK scores, its own test or report cards, and it often includes an institutional development fee. Mandiri dates and requirements for each target university are noted well in advance.
