Mastering the 6 Core Badminton Strokes
Quality badminton comes from clean technique. These are the six core strokes that define your level, from the serve to the smash.
Serve
Opening Stroke
The first stroke that begins every rally. In the modern game, the short serve is used most often in doubles, while the high serve dominates in singles.
Key Techniques
- Hold the shuttlecock by the feathers, not the head
- Make racket contact below the waist as per serve rules
- Aim a short serve thin over the net for doubles
Common Beginner Mistake
Swinging too hard so the serve floats high and is easily smashed by the opponent.
Lob / Clear
Defensive Stroke
A stroke that lifts the shuttle deep to the opponent's rear court. A defensive lob buys time to recover to center, while an attacking lob pushes the opponent toward the baseline.
Key Techniques
- Take the shuttle at the highest reachable point
- Use forearm rotation and a wrist snap
- Shift body weight from the rear foot to the front foot
Common Beginner Mistake
Hitting a half-hearted lob to mid-court so the opponent attacks immediately with a smash.
Net Shot
Front-Court Stroke
A delicate stroke near the net that drops the shuttle as tight as possible on the opponent's side. Good net play forces the opponent to lift the shuttle and opens up an attack.
Key Techniques
- Touch the shuttle gently and reduce power
- Keep the racket positioned in front of the body
- Lunge with the dominant foot forward
Common Beginner Mistake
Playing the net shot too high so the opponent easily chases it or returns a net shot of their own.
Drive
Flat Stroke
A fast, flat stroke parallel to the net and a mainstay of doubles play. The drive keeps the rally tempo high and pressures the opponent without giving them room.
Key Techniques
- Use a grip that switches quickly between forehand and backhand
- Hit with a short, compact swing
- Hold the racket at shoulder height, ready in front of the body
Common Beginner Mistake
Swinging too long, losing speed in close-range drive exchanges.
Dropshot
Deceptive Stroke
A stroke from the rear court that drops the shuttle softly just behind the opponent's net. The dropshot deceives an opponent who is bracing for a smash or clear.
Key Techniques
- Mimic the initial motion of a smash to deceive the opponent
- Slow the racket swing just before contact
- Aim the shuttle to a net corner far from the opponent
Common Beginner Mistake
A swing that reads differently from a smash, letting the opponent move forward early.
Smash
Attacking Stroke
The fastest stroke in badminton, diving sharply downward into the opponent's court. A well-measured smash is the primary weapon for ending a rally.
Key Techniques
- Jump and hit the shuttle at the highest point (jumping smash)
- Snap the wrist quickly at the moment of contact
- Aim the shuttle steeply down with smart placement
Common Beginner Mistake
Forcing a smash from a poor position, losing accuracy and draining energy.
Footwork: The Foundation of Every Stroke
Great badminton players are known by their footwork. Without correct footwork (the split step, the lunge, and the recovery step back to center), every stroke above is hard to execute with balance. Every EduPoint lesson integrates footwork drills so students always arrive in the right position before hitting.
