Debate Training

Before competing, debaters must understand the format the organizers use. These three formats are most relevant for Indonesian students and university debaters.

Asian Parliamentary (AP)

The most common format in Indonesian school and university competitions. Two teams of 3: Government (supporting the motion) versus Opposition (opposing the motion). Each speaker delivers a 7-minute substantive speech, then one member of each team delivers a roughly 4-minute reply speech. Points of Information (POIs) are allowed, while the first and last minute of each speech are 'protected time.' LDBI uses AP-derived rules.

British Parliamentary (BP)

The global university standard, used at WUDC and NUDC since 2013. Four teams of 2: Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government, and Closing Opposition. Speeches run 5-7 minutes with no reply speeches, and roughly 15 minutes of preparation. The main challenge: the closing half must find an 'extension' — a fresh argument the opening half has not delivered.

World Schools (WSDC)

The format for international high school debate, the NSDC selection track to WSDC. Two teams of 3 with eight speeches total: six 8-minute substantive speeches plus two 4-minute reply speeches. This format mixes prepared motions with impromptu motions.

Which should you learn first? For junior and senior high students, start with AP since it is used by most school competitions. Move up to WSDC if targeting NSDC. University students focus on BP for NUDC and IVED.

One of debate's advantages over other activities is its official, structured, government-recognized achievement ladder. Understanding this map helps you set targets.

Senior High School Level

- NSDC (National Schools Debating Championship) — An English-language high school debate championship. Teams represent their provinces, and NSDC is the selection track for Indonesia's delegation to the World Schools Debating Championship. - LDBI (Lomba Debat Bahasa Indonesia) — The Indonesian-language sibling of NSDC, for senior high students under Puspresnas/BPTI, using the Asian Parliamentary format.

University Level

- NUDC (National University Debating Championship) — A ministry-run university debate championship in English-language British Parliamentary format. - IVED (Indonesian Varsity English Debate) — A long-running national 3-on-3 university debate championship. - JOVED (Java Overland Varsities English Debate) — Running since 1997, the first Indonesian tournament to adopt an international format.

International Level

- WSDC for students and WUDC for university students are the peaks of world debate.

The progressive pathway: school debate club → city/provincial selection → NSDC/LDBI or NUDC/IVED → WSDC/WUDC. Note that every level has two language tracks — English and Indonesian — so the opportunities for achievement are wide open.

Many parents ask: beyond being a hobby, what real benefit does debate offer a child? Educational research and practice show the benefits are concrete.

Critical Thinking

Educational research in Indonesia (including in the IRJE journal and Jurnal Pendidikan Humaniora) shows debate methods significantly improve critical-thinking and argumentative ability. Students are trained to evaluate arguments, find logical weaknesses, and weigh evidence.

Supporting UTBK and Literacy

Debate trains information literacy — filtering sources, distinguishing opinion from fact, and understanding context. These skills are directly relevant to the Literacy section of the UTBK and to essay-writing ability.

Added Value for SNBP and Scholarships

Debate achievements are recognized as non-academic accomplishments on the SNBP track, and the achievement/portfolio component can carry significant weight in selection. Winner certificates from city, provincial, and national debate competitions strengthen PTN applications and scholarship essays.

Career Soft Skills

Argumentation, teamwork, and persuasion are 21st-century competencies employers seek. Debaters are used to thinking fast under pressure — valuable capital for job interviews, presentations, and leadership.

The bottom line for parents: debate is a lasting asset of thinking skills whose benefits show up in the classroom, the exam room, and the workplace, reaching far beyond any competition.

The word 'debate' can sound heavy for a child. Yet with the right approach, elementary children can enjoy it and gain great benefit.

When Can a Child Start?

Based on cognitive development, the foundations of speaking courage and structured show-and-tell can begin around age 8 (elementary grade 3-4). At this age a child can already construct simple reasons behind an opinion. Formal debate with speaker roles is better suited to grade 6, when a child can understand rules and think from an opponent's perspective.

The Approach for Children (8-12 years)

Kids debate training at EduPoint does not throw children straight into competition format. The stages are: 1. Mini-debates and argumentation games — light, fun topics like 'cats or dogs are better' 2. Structured show-and-tell — children learn to express ideas with reasons 3. Claim-reasoning practice — building the habit of 'my opinion is... because...' 4. Group mini-debates — with simple rules and a supportive atmosphere

Focus: Courage, Not Winning

For children, the main goal is not winning competitions but building the courage to express opinions, the habit of structured thinking, and the ability to listen. Shy children often develop rapidly because debate gives them a safe framework to speak up.

For junior and senior high students, the competitive approach is then introduced gradually according to each student's readiness.
