The Size 4 Ball, Its Low Bounce and the Hard Floor
A size 4 futsal ball measures 62 to 64 cm around, and the Laws of the Game keep its bounce deliberately low: dropped from 2 metres, it must rebound between 50 and 65 cm on the first bounce. It feels heavier on the foot and tends to roll close to the floor. Players who grew up with a size 5 ball on grass are often surprised in the first few minutes, because the ball refuses to jump the way they expect and stays near the foot after a touch.
That behaviour decides which part of the foot does the controlling. Since the ball rarely rises, the sole can trap it from above and then roll it in any direction. A hard, flat surface, whether parquet, vinyl or coated concrete, makes every roll predictable, so small touches produce precise results. Flat rubber-soled shoes grip that surface and give a clear feel as the sole presses down on the ball. Studded grass boots dull that feel and slip easily on a polished floor.
A sensible first step is simply getting to know the ball: rolling it forwards and back under the right and left sole in turn, stopping a ball that trickles slowly towards you, and sensing how much pressure keeps it still without letting it escape. Learners under 9 use the lighter size 3 ball and the same exercises.
Get to know the weight and low bounce of a size 4 ball on a hard floor first; that is why the sole becomes futsal's main control surface.
