The largest field in the physics olympiad. It covers motion, forces, energy, momentum, rigid bodies, oscillations, and gravity. It demands the ability to choose the most concise reference frame and approach.

One problem often has many routes, and the choice of reference frame decides whether the calculation runs long or short.

Physics olympiad problems test conceptual depth, and many things that feel right in class are wrong at competition level. These five misconceptions are the ones we straighten out most.
Why it happens
Students are used to kinetic friction on a block dragged across the floor.
How we fix it
Static friction can actually be the driving force, for example on a wheel rolling without slipping or a body on an accelerating board. Its direction is set by the tendency of relative motion between surfaces.
Why it happens
Students apply energy conservation without checking the forces at play.
How we fix it
Mechanical energy is conserved only when non-conservative forces do no work. In an inelastic collision or with friction, use momentum conservation first and track the energy that turns into heat.
Why it happens
Students add a centripetal force to the free-body diagram as if it were real.
How we fix it
Centripetal acceleration is always the result of real forces. First identify the tension, normal force, or gravity that provides it, then sum the components toward the center of the circle.
Why it happens
Students force Newton's laws onto an accelerating frame.
How we fix it
In an accelerating frame, pseudo-forces appear such as the centrifugal and Coriolis force. Choosing the right reference frame often cuts an olympiad calculation dramatically.

Students ignore the transient process in a circuit.
How we fix it
RC and RL circuits have a transition period. At t equals zero a capacitor acts like a wire and an inductor like a break; as t approaches infinity it reverses. Grasping these two limits unlocks many problems at once.
Straightening out one wrong intuition often saves many points in the proof round.
