Math Misconceptions We Most Often Correct Through the Screen
Across thousands of online math sessions, one basic concept that goes wrong early often drags grades down. On the digital whiteboard, here are the five we correct most.
Adding denominators in fractions, 1/5 + 2/5 mistaken for 3/10
Why it happens
The child treats the denominator like the numerator, when the denominator is the size of the part and is not added.
How we fix it
On the digital whiteboard we draw the parts, then stress the denominator stays the same: 1/5 + 2/5 = (1+2)/5 = 3/5.
Wrong order of operations, 2 + 3 x 4 mistaken for 20
Why it happens
The child works left to right, when multiplication and division come first.
How we fix it
We drill multiply-divide first, then add-subtract: 2 + 3 x 4 = 2 + 12 = 14, using brackets as markers on screen.
Wrong sign with integers, (-6) x (-4) mistaken for -24
Why it happens
The child thinks the product of two negatives stays negative.
How we fix it
We give an easy sign rule: two same signs give a positive, two different signs give a negative, so (-6) x (-4) = 24.
Computing percent without converting first, 25% of 80 mistaken for 2,000
Why it happens
The child multiplies 25 by 80 directly without converting the percent to a fraction or decimal.
How we fix it
We convert the percent first: 25% equals 1/4 or 0.25, so 25% of 80 = 20.
Confusing factors and multiples
Why it happens
The child treats factors and multiples as the same term, then errs when finding GCF and LCM.
How we fix it
We distinguish them clearly: factors divide evenly and are limited in number, multiples come from multiplying and are unlimited.
