Beyond Excellence
The roots of UMS go back to 1958 when the Surakarta branch of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education was inaugurated by Mayor M. Saleh Werdisastro. At that time the new institution had 51 students, 7 lecturers, and 6 staff members. This institution later grew into IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta. On 24 October 1981, through Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 0330/O/1981, the IKIP was transformed into Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta with its initial faculties covering FKIP, Economics, Law, Engineering, and Islamic Studies. Since then UMS has grown into one of the largest Muhammadiyah universities, equipping itself with teaching hospitals, the Edutorium multipurpose building with a capacity of ten thousand people, as well as postgraduate and professional programs. In 2021 UMS earned the Unggul (Superior) institutional accreditation from BAN-PT, and it now nurtures more than 173,000 alumni active across various fields.
As a private university, UMS does not use the UKT system like state campuses do. Tuition consists of a per-Credit-Unit (SKS) fee that differs by study program, plus a Development Fund paid in two installments at the start of studies, as well as a registration fee of around Rp400.000. UMS offers a Development Fund discount for faster payment. The exact figures per study program can be checked on the official portal at pmb.ums.ac.id.
| Group | Cost per Credit (SKS) | Criteria & Subsidy |
|---|---|---|
| Islamic Studies Cluster (FAI) | Rp160.000 - Rp203.000 | The most affordable per-SKS group at UMS |
| FKIP (Education) | Rp233.000 - Rp315.000 | Per-SKS cost for education programs |
| Faculty of Medicine | Rp1.294.000 | Highest per SKS; the initial payment can reach around Rp208 million |
| Registration Fee | Rp400.000 | Paid once when registering for PMB |
Other faculty clusters such as Economics, Law, Engineering, Psychology, and Health fall within that range. Add the Development Fund according to the study program. Official figures per program are available at pmb.ums.ac.id/biaya/sarjana.
