Three Kinds of Independent Track: Campus CBT, UTBK Score and UM-PTKIN
Independent admission at Indonesian state universities runs through three mechanisms, and each one calls for different preparation. The first is a computer-based test written and run by the campus itself, such as SIMAK UI, UM UGM CBT, SSU ITB, SMUP Unpad, Mandiri UNAIR and SMITS ITS. The second admits applicants on the UTBK score they already hold, with no further test; several universities, including UNY, UB and UNS, use this model. The third is UM-PTKIN, a national test-based selection run by the Ministry of Religious Affairs on the SSE (electronic selection) system for entry to UIN, IAIN and STAIN campuses across the country, often taken alongside the state university independent tracks.
Telling them apart decides what an applicant studies over the coming months. Anyone aiming at a campus CBT needs extra subject material and an answering strategy built around that campus's scoring rules. Applicants on a score-based track sit no new exam, so their work shifts to reading programme capacity, gathering documents and watching deadlines. UM-PTKIN candidates add an Islamic studies component to general academic ability.
Many learners run two types at once, for example applying on their UTBK score at one university while studying for another's campus test, because the two mechanisms and their calendars are separate. A practical first step is to write down every target campus and label it campus CBT, UTBK score or PTKIN according to that year's official admissions page. Every later study decision rests on those labels.
Label each target campus with its track type first, because the type determines what you need to study.
