What Is OSN Elementary Math?
OSN (Olimpiade Sains Nasional, the National Science Olympiad) is Indonesia's official academic competition, run by Puspresnas under the Ministry of Education, and its elementary math track searches for the strongest young mathematical reasoners in the country. Entrants are typically in grades 4-5, since the full selection ladder takes months and grade 6 students are busy with graduation. What sets OSN apart from a regular school test is the character of its problems: nearly all of them are non-routine, meaning the solution path never comes straight from a textbook formula. A child has to read the situation, test a few strategies, and build their own route to the answer.
