UM UGM Tutoring Guide: How to Prepare for UTUL UGM

Every part of UM UGM CBT preparation rests on one document: the subject guide the admissions committee publishes on the admissions.ugm.ac.id portal. It holds the details that set the direction of your study, above all the two Academic Skills Test subjects assigned to each degree programme. Candidates who skip it tend to borrow a friend's syllabus and discover weeks later that their own target programme tests a different pair of subjects.

Reading it well takes care more than time. Start by settling on one or two target programmes. Next, find the pair of academic subjects for each and write them on the first page of your study notebook. Then note the available test locations, Yogyakarta and Jakarta, since your choice affects travel plans in the final days. Finally, bookmark the official link and revisit it regularly, because the committee can update dates and rules.

The eligibility section deserves an early read too. Under the current rules, the test is open to current final-year students and those who graduated in the previous two years, provided they are no older than twenty-five on 1 July. Gap-year candidates and graduates who have worked for a year or two can still apply, provided their graduation year and age fall inside those limits. Confirming this in week one saves you from a long preparation for an exam you cannot actually sit.

The Basic Skills Test applies to every candidate regardless of programme, and two of its three papers are languages. Indonesian here leans heavily on reading comprehension: finding the main idea, grasping what the writer intends, and telling stated information apart from implied conclusions. Vocabulary is seldom the real obstacle. Candidates more often slip by reading too fast and choosing an option that sounds right even though the passage does not support it.

A drill that fits easily into any day is to read one passage and then summarise it in two sentences without looking back. If the summary refuses to come, the main idea has not landed yet. For multiple-choice items, get into the habit of pointing to the sentence in the passage that proves your answer before you select it. This slows you down for the first few weeks, then speeds you up once it becomes a reflex.

English calls for solid vocabulary and basic sentence structure. Words that recur across Basic Skills practice sets go into one running glossary; next to each, write a short sentence that uses it, then revisit the glossary at intervals spread across the week. English reading passages work the same way as Indonesian ones: identify the topic of each paragraph, locate the supporting sentence, then decide. Since exam passages appear on screen, do your reading practice on a laptop from the very start.

The Potential Test measures the kind of thinking university study relies on. It covers verbal, numerical, and logical reasoning, and there is little in it to memorise. What candidates can do is learn the question types well enough to recognise each pattern quickly. Older past papers include types such as synonyms, word analogies, number sequences, quick arithmetic, and visual patterns, which gives type-by-type practice a natural starting point.

Practise one type at a time. Take number sequences, for example, and finish a full set before switching to anything else. Trace every wrong answer back: which step went astray, and what pattern the question was really using. Write the lesson down in a single line. After a few weeks those lines add up to a personal pattern list you can reread before each mock exam.

Once each type feels secure on its own, start mixing. Shuffle verbal, numerical, and logical items into one set, because in the real exam the types arrive in turn and your brain has to switch modes quickly. This reasoning practice also overlaps with UTBK material, so a single hour of work counts toward both exams.

The UM UGM CBT scheme combines your independent test score with your UTBK result. The practical upshot is that both preparations belong in a single calendar. Literacy and reasoning practice for UTBK also strengthens the Potential Test and the Basic Skills Test on the independent track, so one integrated study plan covers the ground for both.

Build the joint calendar by marking the UTBK date and the UM UGM CBT date from their respective official sources, then counting backwards. Place a preparation block of about 8 to 12 weeks ahead of whichever exam comes first, and fit the parts specific to the independent track, chiefly the two academic subjects, inside it. Mark the registration deadlines too, since they are the dates most easily missed while attention is on practice questions.

Within each week, alternate subjects. One day might pair reasoning with English, the next Basic Mathematics with one academic subject, and so on. Interleaving like this gets your brain used to switching contexts the way the exam demands, and it puts spaced practice to work by spreading each topic across several days. Keep one full rest day in the plan, because mental stamina shapes the quality of every other session.

Cramming everything into the final weekend before the exam is a risky pattern. A tired brain absorbs less, and lost sleep erodes concentration at the very moment it is needed most.

UM UGM now runs as a Computer-Based Test in Yogyakarta and Jakarta. Long passages are more tiring to read on a screen than on paper, and moving between subtests eats into concentration. That is why computer-based simulations belong in the timetable from the outset and take up most of your practice time in the final month, including one or two full simulations covering all three components.

Simulations train three things. First, navigation: moving between questions, returning to ones you have not answered, and making sure every answer is saved before the block's time runs out. Second, a personal rule for hard questions, for instance noting the number of any question still unsolved after two minutes and parking it until the end of the block. Third, eye stamina: sitting in front of the screen with the timer running for the full length of the simulation, with no extra breaks.

Use a laptop or desktop, since a phone screen is too small to reproduce the exam experience. After each simulation, log which subtests ran out of time, how many questions you parked, and how many of those you answered when you came back. Compare these figures from one simulation to the next. When the time spent on the same subtest steadies and the number of parked questions shrinks, your exam rhythm is taking shape.
