Selection works through two filters. The first is the per-section SKD cut-off, which eliminates anyone below it. The second is ranking: everyone who clears the cut-offs is ordered by total score, and seats are filled from the top until the quota runs out. This second filter is where the ratio of seats to applicants matters, because the score that counts as safe climbs as competition for each seat gets tighter.

BKN figures for the 2025 intake show 3,252 places across seven ministries and agencies, and three days before registration closed the applicant count had already reached 115,707. That overall figure hides wide differences between schools. Some receive tens of thousands of applications for a few hundred seats, while others open far more places, as IPDN did in 2025, which leaves their ratio looser. A ratio describes the level of competition; the final result still rests on each candidate's score on the day.

To read it, take each candidate school's official quota announcement, note the number of seats, and set it against applicant numbers from the last two or three intakes. An average over several years is more dependable than one year that happened to be quiet or crowded. The result is then checked against career interest and the physical requirements in your table. Choosing a dream school with a tight ratio is still a sound plan, provided the target score in mock tests is set higher from the start.

TKP holds 45 questions, the largest share of the SKD, and it is a common place for candidates to fall. The reason lies in how it is scored. No option is worth zero, so almost every answer seems reasonable, yet dropping one level on many questions is enough to pull the total below 156. Candidates who answer the way they would act in everyday life tend to collect a lot of 3s and 4s.

TKP questions assess how a public servant behaves at work, across areas such as public service, working networks, social and cultural awareness, information technology and professionalism. The highest-scoring response is usually the most proactive one: it moves straight towards a solution, puts the organisation and the public it serves first, and stays within the rules. Responses that delay, hand the problem to someone else or protect personal comfort tend to score low.

Effective practice takes the form of reasoning reviews. After a set, the learner writes down why each answer was chosen and compares that with the scoring order in the explanation. Repeated mistakes, such as always reporting to a superior before acting, are noted and drilled again. Many tutors suggest tackling TKP first in the CAT session while concentration is fresh, since it has the most questions and needs no calculation.

A sign that this skill is settling in: TKP scores above 156 with a steady margin across three mock tests in a row, and the learner can explain why an option is worth 5 without guessing.

TWK tests national insight through 30 questions with a cut-off of 65. It covers Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945), the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, the unitary state, national history, defence of the nation and integrity. The material is broad and memory-based, so the way it is paced matters more than reading speed. Candidates who cram in the final week are usually swamped by article numbers and dates.

The first step is a concept map for each theme. Pancasila is mapped from its formulation through the values of each principle to everyday examples. The Constitution is mapped chapter by chapter, including the frequently tested articles on state institutions, citizens' rights and constitutional amendments. National history is laid out as a timeline of key events and figures. Each mapped theme is condensed onto a single page, which makes it easy to revisit between other study sessions.

Spaced repetition keeps the material alive: a new theme is reviewed a day later, then after three days, a week and two weeks. A short quiz of 10 to 15 questions at the end of each week shows which themes are starting to fade. Case-style TWK questions, such as how to respond to disagreement at work, are practised by linking each option to the Pancasila value that fits it best.

Because TWK is spread out from the first month, it usually feels light near the exam and leaves energy for TIU.

After the SKD the routes split, and the material usually runs deeper than SKD questions. Politeknik Statistika STIS sets a heavily weighted, demanding mathematics test covering algebra, functions, basic calculus, probability and quantitative logic. PKN STAN adds an academic component; in some intakes this has been UTBK-SNBT scores, in others an academic aptitude test and an English test. STMKG emphasises physics and mathematics, in line with its fields of meteorology, climatology and geophysics.

Since the format can change between intakes, the first step is always to read the target school's official announcement and note which components apply. Follow-up test practice then runs alongside the SKD from the early months. A future STIS applicant might split the week into several SKD sessions and two mathematics sessions, with topics moving steadily from algebra to calculus. A PKN STAN applicant facing a UTBK-SNBT component can fold that practice into university entrance preparation, since the material overlaps.

A frequent mistake is postponing the follow-up test until the SKD result is out. The gap between the SKD announcement and the next stage is usually short, leaving too little time to master advanced mathematics or an English test format. A sign that this preparation is on track: the learner has already worked through several timed sets of the target school's follow-up questions and knows which topics still need another round.

The final stages often decide the outcome, because a candidate who is strong academically can still stumble on the psychological test, the interview, the medical check or a missing document. The psychological test measures personality and mental resilience. The way to handle it is to get familiar with the formats, such as the timed arithmetic work test, drawing tasks or personality inventories, and then answer consistently. Answers shaped to look ideal tend to contradict answers given elsewhere in the test.

The interview looks at motivation and at what the candidate understands about the school and its parent agency. Learners prepare answers on why they chose the school, what the work after graduation involves, how ready they are for the service bond, and experiences that show discipline or teamwork. The most useful practice is answering aloud in front of another person, then trimming answers that run long or sound memorised.

The medical check measures physical condition against the school's standard, including height and eyesight at some schools, and some of these requirements cannot change within a few weeks. That is why they are checked when the school is chosen. In the run-up, sleep patterns are improved and caffeine is cut back well in advance. For documents, build a checklist from the official announcement on the Dikdin portal and prepare clear scans before the short registration window opens.
