The history of Universitas Indonesia began on January 2, 1849, when the Dutch colonial government established a School for Health Science and Vaccination in Batavia to train indigenous medical staff who would carry the title 'Javanese Doctor.' In 1898, this school grew into STOVIA (School tot Opleiding van Indische Artsen), which would later produce many national independence movement figures. After the proclamation of independence, various higher education schools inherited from the Dutch were merged into Universiteit van Indonesiรซ. On February 2, 1950, the university was officially named Universitas Indonesia, with Ir. R.M. Pandji Soerachman Tjokroadisoerio as its first Rector. That date is now commemorated as UI's Dies Natalis. From UI several institutions were later born: Institut Teknologi Bandung (1959), Universitas Airlangga (1954), Institut Pertanian Bogor (1963), Universitas Hasanuddin, and Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, all of which were originally part of UI. Today UI has two campuses: the main campus in Depok (320 hectares, since 1987) and the health sciences campus in Salemba (Central Jakarta). Throughout its 177-year journey, UI has produced 31 ministers in the 2024 Merah Putih Cabinet, dozens of national company CEOs, and thousands of professionals who have shaped the face of modern Indonesia.

SIMAK UI combines your UTBK score with the independent exam. Practicing with past SIMAK questions is important because the format differs from UTBK - it places more emphasis on speed and precision.
UI's Vocational Program does not require UTBK and can be an alternative way into UI. After completing a D3/D4, you can continue to an Extension S1 at UI through internal selection.
Make use of the SIMAK UI try-outs run by various tutoring centers to gauge your ability. Mind the tight time limits - get used to working through questions with a timer.
For the KKI (International Class Program) path, prepare your TOEFL/IELTS well in advance of registration. The minimum scores differ by program - Medicine is the highest (IELTS 6 / TOEFL iBT 70).
Find out the realistic passing grade for each program from the previous year's admission data. Programs such as Medicine, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering are always the most competitive.
UI guarantees that no student is expelled over fees. If you are accepted but face financial difficulty, immediately apply for a UKT reduction or the KIP Kuliah scholarship.
Attend an official SIMAK UI preparation workshop from a trusted tutoring center. UI often changes the question format - keep your information up to date from the official site, penerimaan.ui.ac.id.
If you are from outside Greater Jakarta, apply for UI dormitory housing right after registration. Capacity is limited and it greatly helps save on living costs in your first year.
