The history of Universitas Indonesia began on January 2, 1849, when the Dutch colonial government established a School for Health Science and Vaccination in Batavia to train indigenous medical staff who would carry the title 'Javanese Doctor.' In 1898, this school grew into STOVIA (School tot Opleiding van Indische Artsen), which would later produce many national independence movement figures.
After the proclamation of independence, various higher education schools inherited from the Dutch were merged into Universiteit van Indonesië. On February 2, 1950, the university was officially named Universitas Indonesia, with Ir. R.M. Pandji Soerachman Tjokroadisoerio as its first Rector. That date is now commemorated as UI's Dies Natalis.
From UI several institutions were later born: Institut Teknologi Bandung (1959), Universitas Airlangga (1954), Institut Pertanian Bogor (1963), Universitas Hasanuddin, and Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, all of which were originally part of UI. Today UI has two campuses: the main campus in Depok (320 hectares, since 1987) and the health sciences campus in Salemba (Central Jakarta).
Throughout its 177-year journey, UI has produced 31 ministers in the 2024 Merah Putih Cabinet, dozens of national company CEOs, and thousands of professionals who have shaped the face of modern Indonesia.

Medical Education at UI is one of the most competitive programs in Indonesia. Based on UTBK 2024 data, the estimated passing grade for FKUI is in the range of 750+ out of a maximum score of 1000. In 2024, the highest UTBK score accepted at UI was 859.13 for Electrical Engineering. Keep in mind that UI does not release official passing grades - these figures are estimates from historical data. Other factors, such as the applicant-to-quota ratio, also play a role.
What is the difference in UI tuition between the SNBP/SNBT and SIMAK UI paths?
Students admitted through the national paths (SNBP and SNBT) only pay UKT (Single Tuition Fee) per semester, ranging from Rp500.000 to Rp15.000.000+ depending on the UKT group and faculty. Students on the independent path (SIMAK UI), however, must pay UKT plus IPI (Institutional Development Fee), which is paid once in the first semester. IPI ranges from Rp15.000.000 to more than Rp100.000.000 depending on the program and UKT group. UKT group placement is based on verification of the family's financial documents.
Can SIMAK UI registration be covered by KIP Kuliah?
SIMAK UI registration cannot be covered by KIP Kuliah because the independent path falls outside the scope of the KIP program. However, if a student is declared to have passed SIMAK UI, they can still apply for KIP Kuliah to cover the tuition (UKT) through a separate verification process after admission.
