The name Gadjah Mada is taken from the famous Majapahit Prime Minister known for his Palapa Oath to unite the Indonesian archipelago. The establishment of UGM was the result of the founding fathers' struggle who wanted an independent and quality higher education center. The main campus is located in the Bulaksumur area spanning 360 hectares, making it one of the largest campuses in Southeast Asia. Over more than 75 years, UGM has produced two Indonesian presidents, dozens of ministers, governors, and prominent business leaders. In QS World University Rankings 2026, UGM achieved its highest ranking ever at position #224 globally, rising 15 places from the previous year.
