Helping a child afraid of water works gradually and without force: start with playing at the pool edge, then practice blowing bubbles, until the child is willing to dip their own face. A child allowed to build a sense of safety at their own pace grows comfortable in water far faster than one forced straight into deep water.
- Safety is built first, before teaching any swimming technique
- Every small win is celebrated; a child who is forced only grows more fearful
- An adult companion joins in the water so the child feels fully accompanied
- A pool with a shallow area no deeper than the child's waist, with warm and comfortable water
- Well-fitting swim goggles that do not press on the eyes
