JLPT N5 preparation from zero means building four foundations in order: reading kana fluently, memorizing around 800 core vocabulary words, understanding basic grammar patterns, then training your ears with listening questions. Learners who study consistently for one to two hours a day are usually ready to sit N5 within four to six months.
- N5 is the most basic of the five JLPT levels (N5 to N1)
- Three exam sections: language knowledge, reading, and listening
- Passing requires a minimum total score plus a minimum in each section
- A core textbook such as Minna no Nihongo or Genki volume 1
- An N5 vocabulary and grammar list (many are available free online)
